Dr. Roger Moore is the first physician in Elkhart County
to provide Mohs Micrographic surgery - the most effective
removal method for skin cancer.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a highly technical
procedure providing near immediate pathological assessment
of a tumor. Patients only have to wait a matter of minutes
while the cancerous tissue is removed, processed into glass
slide specimens and microscopically reviewed by the dermatologic
surgeon. All margins in the peripheral and deep tissue are
evaluated to provide the most thorough microscopic evaluation
of tissue removed. The tissue removed is color-coded so that
any remaining tumor requires only removal of a thin layer
of skin in the area with cancer. After all tissue layers we
process show no cancer, the patient is considered cured. The
defect is then closed with the best reconstructive technique
necessary to repair the wound.
Mohs Surgery has the highest cure rate for
skin cancer surgery
Other advantages of Mohs surgery for skin cancer:
- MMS preserves the maximum amount of normal skin resulting
in smaller scars.
- MMS is performed under local anesthesia, eliminating
dangers of general anesthesia.
- MMS minimizes risk of recurrence, eliminating the cost
of more invasive surgery.
- MMS allows pathologic evaluation of all margins (peripheral
and deep), providing higher quality pathologic evaluation
compared to typical excisional specimens.
- MMS greatly reduces the cost of inpatient versus outpatient
surgical suites.
